Recognised for its technical expertise, innovative engineering and commitment to quality, the business combines traditional manufacturing capabilities with modern design technologies to deliver reliable, high-performance valve solutions for demanding applications.

The Opportunity

An established and growing specialist valve manufacturer is looking for an experienced Senior Valve Design Engineer to join its engineering team in Brighouse, West Yorkshire.

This is an opportunity to play a leading role in the development of new valve technologies, taking responsibility for concept development, detailed mechanical design and the ongoing improvement of an established industrial valve portfolio.

You will work closely with manufacturing, production and testing teams, ensuring that designs meet demanding technical specifications, industry standards and customer requirements.

The role will suit an experienced mechanical design engineer with a strong understanding of industrial valves, pressure equipment and engineering principles, who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and developing innovative engineering solutions.

You will play an important role in supporting product development, improving valve performance and ensuring the successful transition of designs from initial concept through to manufacture and testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the concept development and detailed mechanical design of new industrial valve products and technologies.
  • Support the ongoing development, improvement and optimisation of existing valve designs.
  • Interpret customer specifications, contractual requirements and technical documentation to develop appropriate engineering solutions.
  • Produce detailed engineering drawings, 3D models, manufacturing specifications and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Carry out engineering calculations covering pressure, stress, shear, torsion, bending, deflection and other mechanical loading conditions.
  • Ensure valve designs comply with relevant industry standards and regulations, including ASME, BS, ISO, API and Pressure Equipment Directive (PED) requirements.
  • Select appropriate materials based on operating conditions, pressure and temperature ratings, corrosion resistance and application requirements.
  • Support actuator sizing and selection to ensure reliable valve operation across varying process and fail-safe conditions.
  • Work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure designs can be successfully produced through machining, casting, assembly and testing processes.
  • Review and verify engineering drawings, calculations and technical documentation to maintain design accuracy and quality.
  • Utilise CAD software to develop detailed valve designs and support engineering improvements.
  • Apply engineering analysis techniques, including FEA and CFD where appropriate, to assess product performance and design integrity.
  • Provide technical support during manufacturing, testing, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
  • Prepare supporting engineering documentation, including technical reports, risk assessments and Installation, Operation and Maintenance (IOM) manuals.
  • Manage multiple engineering design projects, ensuring technical requirements, quality standards and project deadlines are achieved.

About You

  • Previous experience in mechanical design engineering, ideally within industrial valve design, development or manufacturing.
  • A strong understanding of valve technology, operating mechanisms and applications across industrial process environments.
  • Ideally a minimum of five years' relevant engineering design experience.
  • Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, or able to demonstrate equivalent industry experience.
  • Experience using CAD software, preferably SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • A good understanding of mechanical engineering calculations, stress analysis and pressure equipment design.
  • Knowledge of relevant engineering standards and regulations, including PED, ASME, BS, ISO and API.
  • Experience selecting engineering materials based on pressure, temperature, corrosion and process conditions.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes including machining, casting, assembly and product testing.
  • Knowledge of FEA and CFD analysis techniques would be beneficial.
  • Experience producing detailed technical drawings, design calculations, engineering reports and manufacturing documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Organised, technically driven and comfortable managing multiple engineering projects.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with manufacturing, production and wider engineering teams.

Candidates with experience in industrial valve manufacturing, flow control equipment, pressure equipment, mechanical product development or other technically demanding engineered products would be particularly relevant.

What's on Offer?

  • The opportunity to join an established and growing British engineering manufacturer with a strong reputation in industrial valve technology.
  • A senior technical position with responsibility for new product development and existing product improvements.
  • The chance to work on complex engineering projects across industries including water, power generation, oil and gas and cryogenics.
  • Exposure to the full engineering lifecycle, from initial concept and mechanical design through to manufacturing and product testing.
  • The opportunity to contribute to innovation, engineering improvements and the development of specialist valve technologies.
  • A collaborative engineering environment working alongside experienced design, manufacturing and technical specialists.
  • A competitive salary and benefits package reflective of experience.
  • A permanent position offering long-term career development within a specialist engineering business.
