Project Manager – Civil Engineering (Main Contractor)

Permanent | PAYE Salary + Benefits | North East & North Yorkshire (home every night)

Projects across South Durham, Wearside, Teesside & North Yorkshire

Typical schemes £1m–£15m (average £5m–£8m+) | D&B infrastructure & public realm

A highly regarded North East principal contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Project Manager to lead the delivery of civil engineering schemes across the region. This is a business with a strong reputation for quality and performance, a secure forward order book (with work already planned well into 2027/2028), and genuine scope to progress as part of a stable, growing team.

If you enjoy taking full ownership, leading from the front, and delivering projects properly – safely, commercially and to programme – this one is well worth a conversation.

The Company & Workstream

This contractor operates solely across the North East / North Yorkshire, delivering design-and-build infrastructure and public realm projects, including:

  • New highway schemes and road adaptations
  • Cycle paths, tow paths and footpaths
  • Structures (including major retaining walls) and bridges
  • Drainage and flood alleviation schemes
  • Public realm and streetscape improvements

A number of upcoming schemes are particularly focused around Stockton, Middlesbrough, Redcar, Guisborough and Scarborough, alongside wider regional projects.

The Role

As Project Manager, you’ll take cradle-to-grave responsibility for delivery – planning, resourcing, coordinating the supply chain, managing client interfaces, and driving performance across safety, programme, quality and commercial outcomes. Depending on scheme size/complexity, you may lead a single larger project (typically £5m–£8m+) as the main delivery lead, or oversee multiple projects/packages concurrently.

You’ll be supported by an established commercial and delivery structure, but you’ll be the person who sets the standard on site, removes blockers, and ensures the team has absolute clarity on what “good” looks like.

Key Responsibilities

Project leadership & delivery

  • Lead the project team and supply chain from pre-start through to handover and final account
  • Drive a high-performance culture on site: safety, programme certainty, quality and cost control
  • Plan and coordinate resources (labour, plant, materials and subcontractors) to meet programme outputs
  • Maintain accurate project records, reporting and governance throughout delivery

Health, Safety, Quality & Environment

  • Set and maintain best practice H&S standards and ensure robust compliance across the project
  • Produce/own key delivery documents such as Construction Phase Plans and environmental management plans
  • Drive defect-free delivery through effective QA planning, inspection regimes and close-out processes
  • Maintain strong housekeeping, site presentation and audit readiness at all times

Programme & planning

  • Own the master programme and ensure look-ahead planning is effective and communicated
  • Identify constraints early, remove blockers and keep stakeholders aligned
  • Provide accurate progress reporting and forecasting with credible recovery plans where needed

Commercial & contractual (NEC)

  • Strong working understanding of NEC contracts, supporting early warning, change control and risk management
  • Work closely with the commercial team to manage subcontract packages, valuations, progress measurement and CVR input
  • Ensure subcontractor performance meets contractual requirements and programme needs

Client & stakeholder management

  • Be the key client-facing lead, presenting professionally and building trust and repeat work
  • Manage external stakeholders and third parties in a collaborative, solutions-led manner
  • Ensure clear communication of project objectives, risks, mitigation and progress

People leadership

  • Lead, coach and mentor Site Agents, Engineers and wider site teams
  • Build effective working relationships across operations, design and commercial teams
  • Develop succession within the team and raise standards through consistent leadership

What We’re Looking For

  • Proven Project Management experience delivering civil engineering main contractor schemes (highways, drainage, public realm, structures, cycleways/footpaths etc.)
  • Track record of leading projects £5m–£8m+ as the main delivery lead, or successfully overseeing multiple projects concurrently
  • HND or Degree in Civil Engineering / Construction Management (or similar)
  • Strong NEC contract experience with practical understanding of change control and risk management
  • Confident, credible client-facing communicator with a professional approach
  • Strong organisational skills, accurate reporting, and comfort using digital systems for programme/QA/reporting
  • Ability to drive outcomes through others – setting standards, holding people accountable and supporting development
  • Full UK driving licence

(Professional membership such as ICE/CIOB is desirable but not essential.)

Package & Why Join

  • Very competitive salary and benefits package (including car/allowance, pension and standard industry benefits)
  • Regional work only – you’ll be home every night with no requirement to lodge away
  • Interesting and varied D&B civil engineering schemes, acting as a main contractor
  • Cash-rich company with multiple awards and accolades for its management and business performance
  • Secure pipeline: on several regional frameworks with around three-quarters of 2027’s workload already secured, and projects planned into 2028
  • Genuine progression opportunities with a clear route to advance as the business grows
