Highly Competitive Salary and Benefits Package

An established specialist civil engineering contractor is looking to appoint a Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor to strengthen its commercial and pre-construction team.

This is a varied position with a strong emphasis on subcontract procurement, pre-construction planning, design coordination and the commercial management of specialist work packages.

The successful candidate will be responsible for packages of work delivered through the company’s specialist subcontractor supply chain, from the initial review of technical information and procurement strategy through to subcontract award, payment and final account.

The contractor delivers technically demanding civil engineering projects, including reinforced-concrete structures constructed within water-based and environmentally sensitive settings.

The Role

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Working closely with the estimating, design, operational and commercial teams during the pre-construction phase.
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and technical information to understand the individual elements, scope and cost drivers of each subcontract package.
  • Identifying and selecting suitable specialist subcontractors capable of delivering the required works.
  • Preparing detailed subcontract tender enquiries and ensuring prospective subcontractors receive sufficient technical and commercial information to accurately price the work.
  • Liaising with subcontractors throughout the tender process and responding to technical, design, programme and commercial queries.
  • Analysing and comparing subcontractor quotations on a like-for-like basis.
  • Negotiating commercial terms and making recommendations regarding subcontractor selection and package award.
  • Identifying design interfaces, procurement risks, programme implications and potential gaps in scope.
  • Preparing and placing subcontract orders under appropriate contractual terms.
  • Supporting the transition of each package from pre-construction into project delivery.
  • Undertaking site visits to check progress, measurements and completed works.
  • Assessing subcontractor applications for payment and preparing accurate valuations.
  • Managing variations, compensation events, commercial correspondence and changes in scope.
  • Ensuring subcontractors are paid accurately and in accordance with the relevant contract.
  • Supporting cost forecasting, reporting and final-account negotiations.

The Person

Applications are welcomed from Quantity Surveyors and Senior Quantity Surveyors with experience in areas such as:

  • Civil engineering.
  • Reinforced-concrete structures.
  • Heavy infrastructure.
  • Water-related construction projects.
  • Specialist subcontract procurement.
  • Design-and-build projects.
  • Pre-construction commercial management.

You should have a strong understanding of subcontract procurement, including the preparation of tender enquiries, analysis of quotations, commercial negotiation, package award, valuation and final account.

Experience working with NEC forms of contract would be highly advantageous.

The position would suit a commercially astute Quantity Surveyor who enjoys becoming involved during the front end of projects and is comfortable coordinating the commercial, technical, design and procurement interfaces associated with complex subcontract packages.

The Opportunity

This is a permanent opportunity to join a successful and expanding civil engineering contractor with a strong pipeline of technically interesting projects.

The company offers:

  • A highly competitive basic salary.
  • A comprehensive benefits package.
  • Hybrid working, combining office-based and home working.
  • Involvement in projects from pre-construction through to final account.
  • The opportunity to work closely with experienced estimating, design, operational and commercial professionals.
  • Genuine scope for professional development and longer-term career progression.

All applications will be treated in the strictest confidence. Your details will not be shared with anyone until we’ve discussed the opportunity in more detail and you’re happy to proceed.
