Senior Estimator – Civil Engineering (Highways / Public Realm)

North East (office-based with regional travel as required)

Projects typically £1m–£65m | Strong pipeline through 2027/2028


A well-established, highly regarded civil engineering contractor is looking to appoint a Senior Estimator to support a growing programme of highways, roads and public realm work across the North East. This is a great opportunity to join a business with a strong regional reputation, a solid order book, and a varied mix of design-and-build infrastructure schemes.


The role


As Senior Estimator, you’ll be responsible for producing accurate, commercially robust estimates across a range of tenders, contracts and sub-contract works. You’ll interpret technical information, apply strong analytical thinking, and support senior stakeholders with timely, well-structured submissions that balance risk, opportunity and deliverability.


Key responsibilities


  • Produce accurate tender estimates and present them to Senior Management for settlement within agreed timescales
  • Build estimates using first principles (labour, plant, materials, prelims, programme-driven costs)
  • Prepare and issue sub-contractor packages for specialist elements of work, in line with required deadlines
  • Identify and evaluate risks and opportunities throughout the tender process, contributing to bid strategy
  • Provide regular progress feedback and input to the wider estimating team
  • Plan and manage workload effectively to ensure client and internal deadlines are consistently met
  • Liaise closely with internal teams and supply chain partners to validate pricing assumptions and scope
  • Uphold high standards of Health & Safety, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and internal expectations
  • Participate fully in appraisals, CPD and training activity to support ongoing development
  • Promote fairness and equality in the workplace, treating everyone with dignity and respect


What we’re looking for


Experience


  • Minimum 3+ years’ occupational experience in estimating within civil engineering
  • Experience pricing highways, roads, public realm, drainage, structures and/or flood alleviation is highly desirable
  • Causeway estimating experience is advantageous (but not essential)


Skills & attributes


  • Excellent communication skills (written and face-to-face)
  • Strong telephone manner and stakeholder engagement ability
  • High attention to detail with a quality-first approach to submissions
  • Strong time management, planning and organisation
  • Flexible, proactive mindset with the ability to manage competing deadlines

This contractor operates solely across the region, delivering design-and-build infrastructure and public realm projects including:


  • Highways and road improvements/adaptations
  • Cycleways and footpaths
  • Structures (including retaining walls)
  • Drainage and flood alleviation
  • Streetscape and public realm enhancements
