Permanent Site Engineer

North West England

Civil Engineering | Water | Energy | Infrastructure

A well-established and highly reputable privately owned contractor is looking to appoint a Permanent Site Engineer to support a growing workload across the North West.

With a trading history spanning more than 50 years and a workforce of over 500 employees, this business has built an excellent reputation within civil engineering, building, surfacing and infrastructure. Operating across the UK, but with a strong concentration of work in the North West, they deliver a broad and technically interesting range of projects across water, energy, highways, drainage, industrial and wider civils environments.

This is an excellent opportunity for a capable civil engineering professional who enjoys being close to the work, takes pride in accuracy and quality, and wants to be part of a business with strong technical capability, a secure pipeline and varied project exposure.

The Opportunity

The role will suit a Site Engineer who is confident taking ownership of setting out, technical support, QA and day-to-day engineering duties on live civil engineering projects. You will play a key role in ensuring work is delivered correctly, safely and efficiently, while supporting the wider site team with planning, coordination and problem-solving.

Projects are centred around water, civils and energy-related works, alongside wider highways, drainage, external works, concrete structures, roadworks and land remediation. There is also a growing emphasis on sustainable and low-carbon construction methods, making this an appealing opportunity for someone who wants to work on modern infrastructure projects with long-term relevance.

Project values typically range from around £100,000 up to £10 million, with an average value of approximately £6 million. Scheme durations tend to vary between 12 weeks and 12 months, creating a healthy mix of shorter-term programmes and longer-duration jobs. The business also operates with useful variety in its delivery model, working roughly 50% as a main contractor and 50% as a subcontractor.

Most work is retained within around 90 minutes of the Warrington office, with a strong flow of projects across Preston, Lancaster and Cumbria.

Types of Work

The project portfolio is broad, which gives this role genuine variety. Current and typical works include water infrastructure and AMP8 schemes, wastewater treatment environments, storm tanks, highways and link roads, drainage packages, utilities, earthworks, reinforced concrete structures, substations, battery storage facilities, industrial civils and remediation.

This is the kind of role that will appeal to an engineer who wants to be involved in meaningful civil engineering works rather than being limited to one narrow project type. The business undertakes everything from roads, junctions and public realm through to energy civils, process environments and technically demanding infrastructure packages.

The Role

As Site Engineer, you will be responsible for accurate setting out across a variety of civils works, including roads, drainage, structures, earthworks and public realm. You will be expected to use one-person robotic total station equipment confidently, carry out routine checks and calibration, and maintain high standards of technical accuracy across the site.

Alongside setting out, you will provide day-to-day technical support to the project team. This will include reading and interpreting drawings and specifications, identifying discrepancies, raising technical queries at the right time, and helping to coordinate practical construction issues before they affect progress on site.

You will also support quality assurance processes by maintaining accurate records, inspections, as-builts and handover information. A strong awareness of programme, planning and sequencing will be important, as will the ability to ensure engineering activities are completed ahead of follow-on trades and site operations.

The position also requires a strong appreciation of health, safety and environmental standards. You will be expected to lead by example, work to approved RAMS, support safe systems of work and maintain high site standards at all times.

There is also a commercial and communication aspect to the role. You will be expected to keep clear records, check deliveries, help monitor quantities and usage, and maintain good communication with site management, subcontractors and the wider project team. A practical, solutions-led mindset will be highly valued.

What They Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will already have proven site engineering experience within civil engineering and infrastructure environments. You should be comfortable working across projects involving roads, drainage, structures, earthworks, utilities or similar civil engineering packages, and be able to work with confidence and minimal supervision on the technical side of delivery.

You will need to be organised, accurate and proactive, with the ability to spot issues early, communicate clearly and support the smooth running of work on site. Just as importantly, you should have the right attitude — practical, reliable, team-oriented and committed to delivering work properly.

Essential Requirements

  • HNC / HND or higher in Civil Engineering or a related discipline
  • CSCS card
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Proven civil engineering site engineering experience
  • Strong setting out capability using one-person robotic total station equipment
  • Good understanding of drawings, specifications and setting out methodology
  • Experience producing as-builts, inspections and quality records
  • Basic AutoCAD skills
  • Good general IT capability

Highly Desirable

  • SSSTS or SMSTS
  • First Aid at Work
  • Experience working across water, energy or infrastructure schemes
  • A strong understanding of QA processes, records and digital project systems
