Site Manager (Civil Engineering) – North East

The company

Our client is a long-established civil engineering contractor in the North East, delivering both principal contractor and subcontract packages. With ~20 years’ trading, c.£10m turnover and a stable directly employed team, they run around 10 live schemes at any one time across Durham and Tyne & Wear.

Typical project values range from £100k to £7.5m (average c.£400k), with ~20% principal contractor 80% as a sub contractor work and growth planned.

The role

You’ll take full day-to-day responsibility for site delivery—leading labour and subcontractors, driving programme, quality and H&S, and representing the business professionally with clients and stakeholders. You’ll report to a visiting Contracts Manager and work closely with commercial (QS) support.

Key responsibilities

• Plan, coordinate and deliver works to programme (1–2 week look-ahead updates)
• Lead site inductions, briefings and daily coordination; chair TBTs
• Produce/review RAMS; maintain exemplary H&S standards (zero-harm mindset)
• Manage labour, plant, materials and subcontract procurement on site
• Quality control, ITPs and handover documentation
• Client and stakeholder interface; progress meetings and reporting
• Accurate site administration: diaries, photos, progress records (MS Office & tablet/iPad)
• Read/interpret drawings and resolve on-site technical queries

About you

• Proven track record as the No.1 site leader on civil engineering projects
• Tickets: SMSTS, CSCS, First Aid (current)
• Confident leading direct and subcontract teams and holding people to account
• Strong H&S and quality focus; thorough with paperwork
• Competent with MS Office and tablet-based site systems
• Full UK driving licence
• NEC contract awareness helpful (nice to have, not essential)
