Managing Quantity Surveyor (Permanent)

Wakefield, West Yorkshire (primarily office-based, with travel to sites as required)

Salary: £75,000 + £7,500 car allowance + strong benefits


The company


This is a well-established UK contractor, founded in 1992, with over 300 people across multiple regional offices. The business operates nationwide and is recognised for specialist bridges and structures maintenance, supporting major strategic road networks, local authorities and tier-one contractors.


Their work spans planned and reactive highways/structures programmes, including bridge repair and maintenance, deck waterproofing, expansion joints, bearings, concrete repairs and wider highways maintenance activities. They also provide early contractor involvement (ECI) and design/specification support to develop practical, buildable solutions.


The opportunity


We are seeking an experienced Managing Quantity Surveyor to lead the commercial function for a busy infrastructure delivery operation based out of Featherstone. You will be the senior commercial lead, driving robust commercial governance, partnering closely with operations, and managing/mentoring a small QS team, including an Apprentice QS.

You will report to the Commercial Director and work closely with the local Operations Manager and senior leadership, taking ownership of NEC contract administration, change control and financial performance.


Salary and benefits

Key responsibilities


Pre-contract leadership


  • Work closely with pre-contract colleagues to identify and convert opportunities
  • Support estimating and bid strategy to balance competitiveness with margin requirements
  • Provide commercial input to ensure projects move efficiently from award into delivery
  • Feed lessons learnt back into estimating and commercial best practice


Commercial and cost control


  • Lead project cash collection, applications, and resolution of client queries
  • Own NEC change control: early warnings, compensation events, CE registers and/or CEMAR administration
  • Implement cost control measures, identify savings/value engineering opportunities, and protect margin
  • Produce and manage turnover/margin budgets, forecasts and commercial reporting
  • Review and manage risk in contract and subcontract terms


Contract and stakeholder management


  • Lead contract negotiations and manage key commercial documentation (scope, terms, BoQ where applicable)
  • Ensure compliance with contractual obligations and support dispute/claim resolution where needed
  • Oversee interim valuations, final accounts and timely invoicing
  • Provide high-quality commercial reporting to senior management, highlighting risk and opportunity


Team leadership


  • Line manage and mentor Quantity Surveyors, supporting performance, development and progression
  • Build a culture of financial discipline, collaboration and delivery-focused commercial support


What we’re looking for


  • BSc/MSc in Quantity Surveying (or equivalent)
  • Extensive experience as a QS/SQS/MQS within civil engineering and/or highways infrastructure
  • Strong NEC contract knowledge and confidence in change management and commercial governance
  • Track record of leading people and influencing operational delivery through strong commercial partnering
  • Strong MS Office skills and high-quality reporting capability
  • Professional, organised, discreet and able to handle sensitive information confidentially
  • Flexible to travel as required by the role
