Site Engineer or Senior Site Engineer – Civil Engineering (Main Contractor)

Permanent | PAYE Salary + Benefits | North East & North Yorkshire (home every night)

Projects across South Durham, Teesside & North Yorkshire

Typical schemes £1m–£15m (average £5m–£8m+) | D&B infrastructure & public realm

A well-established regional principal contractor is looking to appoint a capable Site Engineer to support the delivery of a strong pipeline of civil engineering works across the North East and North Yorkshire. You’ll be joining a business known for high standards, long-term work security and the chance to progress as you grow.

This role suits a driven engineer who enjoys being on site, solving problems, getting the setting out right first time, and supporting the team to deliver safely, accurately and efficiently.

The Company & Projects

Operating solely across the region, this contractor delivers design-and-build infrastructure and public realm schemes including: highways and road adaptations, cycleways/footpaths, drainage and flood alleviation, structures (including retaining walls), and public realm/streetscape works. You’ll be part of a stable team with work planned well ahead.

The Role

As Site Engineer, you’ll provide day-to-day engineering support across the project lifecycle—setting out, surveying, QA, record keeping and technical coordination. You’ll work closely with the Site Agent/PM and supply chain to ensure works are delivered to specification, on programme and with strong attention to quality and compliance.

A key part of the role is hands-on engineering: you must be confident using a one-person robotic total station, producing accurate as-builts, and supporting effective planning through timely setting out and clear technical communication.

Key Responsibilities

Setting out & surveying

  • Carry out accurate setting out for civils works (roads, drainage, structures, earthworks, public realm)
  • Confidently operate one-person robotic total station equipment and complete routine checks/calibration
  • Produce and maintain as-built surveys and assist with handover information

Technical support

  • Read and interpret drawings/specifications; spot discrepancies and raise TQs early
  • Identify services on drawings and on site; support safe digging and coordination
  • Assist with basic clash checks / coordination reviews on construction information
  • Produce / update basic technical drawings where required and maintain clear site mark-ups
  • Use basic AutoCAD for simple edits, mark-ups and drawing outputs

Health, safety & environment

  • Understand and implement safe methods of work; work to approved RAMS
  • Lead by example on H&S and environmental best practice—no shortcuts
  • Maintain good site standards and support audit readiness

Programme & progress

  • Understand the programme and short-term look-aheads
  • Manage your time effectively to hit milestones and ensure setting out is completed ahead of follow-on trades
  • Feed progress, constraints and upcoming requirements into weekly planning

Quality & QA

  • Complete relevant inspections/work inspection sheets and support ITP compliance
  • Maintain a daily diary and accurate site records
  • Recognise defective work early and support prompt rectification
  • Ensure QA documentation is completed and filed correctly using the project’s digital systems

Commercial awareness

  • Check material deliveries, report discrepancies and help keep accurate usage records
  • Produce basic take-offs and support measurement where needed
  • Understand the basics of a contract and the importance of records, change and evidence

Communication & teamwork

  • Keep the site team informed, support colleagues and communicate clearly with subcontractors
  • Contribute professionally to client-facing interactions when required
  • Bring a practical, solutions-led approach and be open to new ideas and improvements

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • HNC / HND (or higher) in Civil Engineering (or similar)
  • CSCS card
  • Full UK driving licence (clean/low points)
  • Proven civils site engineering experience (roads, drainage, structures, public realm etc.)
  • Competent with one-person robotic total station setting out equipment
  • Basic AutoCAD skills and good general IT capability
  • Strong understanding of drawings, specifications, setting out methodology and QA requirements

Highly desirable

  • SSSTS or SMSTS
  • First Aid at Work

Personal attributes

  • Courteous, professional, approachable and a strong team player
  • “Can do / will do” attitude with good communication skills
  • Organised, focused and able to work well under pressure to deadlines
  • Willing to take feedback, improve and develop with the role

Package & Why Join
