CIVILS ESTIMATOR (PERMANENT)

North Tyneside – near Killingworth | Full-time | Competitive salary + package (DOE)

A well-established North East contractor (founded in the early 1970s) is looking to appoint a Civils Estimator on a permanent basis, based at their North Tyneside office near Killingworth. The business has a long-standing reputation in the region and a stable team of around 40 staff split between office and site. Turnover is currently in the mid-single millions, with a clear plan to continue growing back towards previous levels.

The workload is varied and consistent. Approximately 60% of the business sits in civils, with the remainder covering building/facilities and associated specialist packages. Projects span a broad range of sectors including building/FM, HV and utilities-related works, petrochemical, commercial, and frameworks across schools and hospital environments. The business largely operates as a subcontractor, but does deliver a portion of projects as main contractor. Clients include well-known retailers, NHS estates, universities, utilities providers and industrial organisations. Typically, they run 12–14 live sites at any one time, with project values commonly falling in the £500k–£1.5m range.

This is a true “cradle to grave” estimating role. You’ll take ownership of tenders from initial enquiry through to submission, producing estimates from first principles and completing take-offs, pricing schedules and Bills of Quantities where required. You’ll be involved in tender reviews, site visits as needed, post-tender clarifications and supporting handovers into delivery.

A key part of the role is collaboration: you’ll work closely with procurement to determine and sense-check the best supply chain rates, securing quotes, validating returns and ensuring tenders remain competitive. You’ll also liaise with operational and engineering teams to confirm methodology, outputs/production rates and programme allowances, and you’ll apply a solid understanding of common forms of contract to ensure submissions are compliant and commercially robust. There is an expectation you can manage deadlines and, where required, help coordinate workloads to ensure submissions are delivered on time.

To be considered, you’ll need proven estimating experience within civils bids/tenders and confidence pricing a variety of disciplines. Good IT skills are essential (estimating tools plus strong Excel/Office capability), along with clear communication skills to work effectively across procurement, delivery teams and the supply chain.
