We’re seeking a proven Sub Agent to take day-to-day ownership of site delivery on a landmark civil engineering scheme at an iconic North East structure. You’ll lead by example on safety, coordinate subcontractors, keep programme and quality on track, and be a key driver of operational excellence. Ideal for an engineer who has stepped up to run sections or small projects and now wants broader remit and responsibility.

The role — what you’ll do

Lead on Safety, RAMS & Temporary Works

  • Carry out inductions and toolbox talks; set the standard for H&S and environmental best practice.
  • Develop, review and approve RAMS (including subcontractor RAMS).
  • Act as/coordinate Temporary Works Co-ordinator in line with procedure and construction phase plans.
  • Proactively identify and rectify unsafe/defective works; compile H&S file and handover documentation.

Plan, Programme & Deliver

  • Build, own and update the weekly programme; assist the Planner with monthly updates.
  • Monitor progress against key deliverables (incl. procurement schedule) and de-risk the critical path.
  • Manage information flow, raise and track technical queries; problem-solve and “think outside the box” to unlock cost/time benefits.

Engineering & Quality

  • Apply solid core engineering principles across highways, public realm and RC structures.
  • Champion QA: maintain ISO 9001/14001/45001 documentation; ensure records and as-builts are complete and accurate.
  • Mentor and develop site engineers; set the benchmark for workmanship and record-keeping.
  • Use document management systems consistently for audit-ready records.

Commercial & Procurement

  • Understand NEC obligations (Cl.31/32/60); support early warnings and change control.
  • Keep accurate measures for direct and subcontract works; support variations and quotations.
  • Develop and manage procurement schedules; appraise subcontractors and drive performance.
  • Contribute to monthly commercial reporting and risk/opportunity logs.

Stakeholders & Reporting

  • Chair weekly internal and client progress meetings; prepare daily/weekly progress reports.
  • Produce concise monthly reports in line with contract requirements; keep colleagues informed and aligned.

About you — what you’ll bring

  • 8+ years’ civil engineering experience (highways/roads/public realm/RC) with time served in engineering before stepping into management.
  • SMSTS (5-day) and CSCS Gold (or above); First Aid at Work desirable.
  • Appropriate civils qualification (HNC/HND/Degree).
  • Exposure to bridge structures and scaffolding with a sound grasp of structural principles.
  • Working knowledge of NEC/JCT, planning software basics, and modern CDE/document control tools.
  • Clean (or low-points) UK driving licence and willingness to travel across the region.

Attributes

  • Safety-first leader who won’t take risks; calm under pressure and deadline-driven.
  • Clear communicator who adapts style to client, subcontractor and workforce.
  • Organised, detail-focused, commercially aware and solutions-oriented.
  • Open, honest, approachable; supports colleagues and mentors juniors; genuine “can-do/will-do” mindset.
  • Comfortable chairing meetings and giving concise updates; receptive to feedback and committed to continuous improvement.

What’s in it for you

  • Permanent role with a respected regional main contractor delivering landmark works at an iconic North East structure.
  • Competitive salary and package (DOE), vehicle/allowance, pension and professional development.
  • Real scope to own sections, influence outcomes and progress to Agent.
