Site Supervisor – Civil Engineering

North East England

Permanent PAYE

The company

Our client is an established civil engineering contractor with a strong presence across the North East and a substantial long-term regional workload.

The business delivers a broad range of civil engineering and infrastructure projects, including water and wastewater infrastructure, drainage, highways, public realm, environmental works, reinforced concrete structures, earthworks and wider general civils schemes.

Due to continued workload and a strong pipeline of secured projects, they are looking to appoint an experienced Site Supervisor to support the delivery of projects throughout the North East.

The role will provide exposure to a mixture of water infrastructure and general civil engineering projects rather than being focused on one particular sector.

Typical schemes may include:

  • Water and wastewater infrastructure
  • Deep drainage and pipelines
  • Sewerage and treatment works
  • Pumping stations and storage assets
  • Reinforced concrete structures
  • Chambers, shafts and underground structures
  • Highways and infrastructure works
  • Earthworks and groundworks
  • Environmental and flood-related projects
  • Public realm and general civil engineering schemes

Projects will predominantly be located across the North East of England. This is intended to be regional employment rather than a working-away position, with employees generally returning home each evening.

The role

We are looking for an experienced Site Supervisor capable of taking ownership of the day-to-day delivery of civil engineering works on site.

You will be responsible for organising the workforce and resources, maintaining safety and quality standards and ensuring works progress efficiently and in accordance with programme.

Typical responsibilities will include:

  • Take day-to-day responsibility for driving site activities and maintaining progress against programme.
  • Plan, manage and organise direct labour and subcontractors.
  • Coordinate site activities with Project Managers, engineers and other members of the project team.
  • Brief the workforce, review RAMS and ensure gangs understand and comply with agreed methods of working.
  • Ensure permits are correctly issued, understood and adhered to.
  • Maintain high health, safety and environmental standards.
  • Ensure sites remain safe, organised and professionally presented.
  • Manage quality and compliance in accordance with company procedures and project requirements.
  • Organise labour, plant and materials efficiently.
  • Coordinate deliveries and material call-offs.
  • Maintain accurate site diaries, registers and project records.
  • Review timesheets, holidays and absence for direct labour where required.
  • Manage materials and waste effectively and minimise unnecessary cost or wastage.
  • Identify and escalate technical, safety, quality, commercial or programme issues before they impact project delivery.
  • Ensure lifting operations are properly planned, supervised and undertaken in accordance with relevant requirements.
  • Represent the contractor professionally with clients, subcontractors and other stakeholders.

About you

You will need a strong background in civil engineering and previous experience supervising site-based construction works.

Experience within water, wastewater or sewage treatment environments would be advantageous, although candidates from strong general civil engineering, infrastructure or groundworks backgrounds will also be considered.

The company is looking for someone capable of actively managing a site rather than simply overseeing the workforce. You should therefore be organised, methodical and comfortable planning ahead, coordinating resources, solving problems and maintaining progress.

Ideally you will have:

  • Previous Site Supervisor experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, water or groundworks.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS.
  • SEATS.
  • First Aid.
  • Temporary Works Supervisor qualification.
  • Lifting Supervisor qualification.
  • CSCS Card.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Experience reviewing RAMS, method statements, permits and site documentation.
  • Good technical understanding of civil engineering construction.
  • Ability to organise labour, plant, materials and subcontractors.
  • Computer literacy and confidence using Office 365 and electronic site records.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good problem-solving ability and commercial awareness.

Salary & location

Salary is expected to be in the mid-£50,000s, depending upon experience, plus company vehicle or car allowance and associated benefits.

The position is permanent PAYE employment with a well-established civil engineering contractor offering a strong pipeline of long-term regional work.

Projects will primarily be located throughout the North East of England, providing a varied workload across both water infrastructure and wider general civil engineering schemes.

The intention is that employees remain regionally based and are home each evening rather than routinely working away.
