ASSISTANT QUANTITY SURVEYOR (HIGHWAYS / TECHNOLOGY CIVILS)

Location: Near Darlington (North East)

Salary: £26,000 – £30,000 + benefits

Type: Permanent, full-time


THE COMPANY


We are a well-established and rapidly growing UK civil engineering and highways contractor delivering technology-led infrastructure works for highways and local authority clients nationwide. Our delivery typically includes street lighting, traffic signs (including electronic message signs), traffic signals, EV charging infrastructure, fibre/broadband networks, low-voltage connections (ICP), and associated highways civils.

The North East team supports a busy programme of works across multiple framework and client regions, delivering both longer-term schemes and a high volume of smaller reactive/maintenance jobs. Project values typically range from £50k to £5m, with a mix of short-duration works and multi-year programmes.


THE ROLE


This is an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor with 1–2 years’ + experience who wants to build a strong commercial foundation within a supportive team. You’ll work closely with an experienced Quantity Surveyor, assisting with the commercial administration and control of live projects across highways, lighting, and technology infrastructure.

This role is ideal for someone already studying (or looking to start) an HNC, HND or Degree in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline, whether via day release or study outside office hours.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Working under the guidance of a Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial management of projects, including:


Cost control and reporting


  • Assisting with cost/value reconciliations and basic forecasting
  • Updating cost trackers, labour/plant/material records and subcontractor accounts
  • Supporting monthly reporting and internal commercial dashboards


Subcontract procurement and account support


  • Assisting with procurement administration (enquiries, comparisons, order placement)
  • Supporting subcontractor valuations, payment processes, and account queries
  • Collating documentation such as delivery tickets, timesheets, invoices and supporting records


Change control and contract administration (NEC exposure beneficial not essential)


  • Supporting the identification, recording and administration of change/variations
  • Assisting with quotations, backup information and commercial submissions
  • Maintaining change registers and supporting commercial correspondence
  • Helping ensure documentation is accurate, organised and audit-ready


Site and stakeholder liaison


  • Working with site teams to gather measures, progress updates and evidence
  • Assisting with measurement and take-offs where required
  • Supporting communication with client representatives and internal stakeholders


Commercial best practice


  • Maintaining structured records and ensuring key commercial documentation is filed correctly
  • Supporting continuous improvement in cost control, reporting accuracy and communication
  • Working in line with company safety, quality and compliance standards


WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR


Essential


  • 1–2 years’ experience in a commercial role within construction/civils (Assistant QS, Commercial Assistant, Trainee QS, etc.)
  • Some basic knowledge or exposure to NEC forms of contract (NEC3/NEC4), even if limited (Preferable, not essential)
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive, solutions-focused approach
  • Good communication skills and confidence working with site and office teams
  • Competent in Excel and MS Office
  • Full right to work in the UK and ability to travel locally as required


Desirable


  • Experience supporting valuations, applications for payment, or change processes
  • Currently studying (or keen to study) an HNC/HND/Degree (or apprenticeship route) in Quantity Surveying or similar
  • Comfortable working across multiple smaller jobs alongside longer-running schemes

  • Office-based role near Darlington, with flexibility available by agreement (including up to 2 days WFH where suitable)
