Job Title: Site Agent (Civil Engineering Main Contractor)

Location: Office West Yorkshire (projects across the Yorkshire region only)

Sector: General Civils | Typical project values: £1 million – £15 million (Average project value £5–8 million, with schemes delivered up to c.£65 million)

Contract: Permanent


About the role


We are seeking a capable, driven Site Agent to take full day-to-day responsibility for delivering general civil engineering schemes safely, efficiently and to the required specification and quality standards.

You will lead site operations, coordinate subcontractors and direct labour, and drive programme, cost and quality performance—setting the tone for health, safety and overall operational excellence on site.


About the contractor & projects


This is a principal contractor operating solely across Yorkshire, delivering design-and-build infrastructure and public realm projects. Typical work includes:


  • New highway schemes and road adaptations
  • Cycle paths, tow paths and footpaths
  • Bridges and other structures (including large retaining walls)
  • Major drainage and flood alleviation schemes
  • Public realm and streetscape improvements


Schemes are delivered across the Yorkshire region—typically within the area bounded by Harrogate, York, Hull, Sheffield, and Halifax Current and secured work into 2026 includes projects in and around Huddersfield, Brighouse, Elland, Bradford, Halifax, Barnsley, Sheffield, Kirklees, Scunthorpe, Hull and Rotherham.


Key responsibilities


Safety, environment & quality


  • Lead by example on Health, Safety and Environmental performance—no compromises.
  • Deliver clear inductions and toolbox talks (TBTs); brief and enforce RAMS.
  • Develop, review and approve RAMS (including subcontractor RAMS).
  • Produce Construction Phase Plans and manage permits.
  • Maintain QA records to ISO 9001, 14001 and ISO 45001 (formerly OHSAS 18001).
  • Identify defective works early and drive timely rectification.


Planning, engineering & temporary works


  • Act as (or support) Temporary Works Coordinator in line with company procedures.
  • Apply sound engineering principles; mentor and develop site engineers.
  • Assist the planner with baseline and monthly updates; build weekly lookaheads independently.
  • Monitor progress, sequence key deliverables, and maintain the procurement schedule.
  • Manage information flow; raise and track technical queries promptly.
  • Working knowledge of planning software


Commercial & contractual


  • Understand NEC contract processes (e.g., Clause 31/32 programme, Clause 60 compensation events).
  • Keep accurate records and measurements for direct and subcontract works.
  • Support the commercial team with variations, quotes and monthly reporting.
  • Contribute to subcontract procurement and manage subcontract performance and appraisals.
  • Identify risks and opportunities; communicate clearly in monthly reports.


Reporting, leadership & stakeholder management


  • Chair weekly internal and client progress meetings; issue minutes and actions.
  • Prepare daily/weekly progress reports and monthly reports in line with the contract.
  • Ensure the wider team complies with reporting, document control and DMS protocols.
  • Foster a positive, collaborative site culture and maintain strong client relationships.


Qualifications & experience


  • HNC/HND/Degree in Civil Engineering (or similar).
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience delivering civil engineering schemes (£500k–£5m).
  • CSCS (Gold minimum) and 5-day SMSTS.
  • First Aid at Work (desirable).
  • Good IT skills (documents, spreadsheets, planning tools, DMS).
  • Clean (or low-points) UK driving licence.
