Permanent Site Agent / Site Manager

North West England

Civil Engineering | Water | Energy | Infrastructure

A well-established and highly reputable privately owned contractor is looking to appoint an experienced Site Agent / Site Manager to support continued growth across its North West division.

With a trading history of more than 50 years and a workforce of over 500 employees, this business has built a strong reputation for delivering complex civil engineering and infrastructure works across the UK. Their portfolio spans water, energy, highways, drainage, industrial and wider civils projects, combining the stability of a long-standing contractor with the variety and technical interest of a diverse workload.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced site leader who enjoys taking ownership of schemes, driving programmes forward, and working closely with delivery, commercial and client teams to ensure projects are completed safely, on time and to a high standard.

The Opportunity

The role will suit someone who is comfortable managing projects from initial set-up through to completion, coordinating labour, plant, materials and subcontractors while maintaining full control of health and safety, programme, quality and cost.

The work itself is varied and interesting. Projects are centred around water, civils and energy-related works, alongside wider highways, drainage, external works, concrete structures, roadworks and land remediation. There is also a growing emphasis on sustainable and low-carbon construction methods, giving the role a modern and forward-looking feel.

Typical project values range from around £100,000 to £10 million, with an average scheme value of circa £6 million. Schemes tend to run anywhere from 12 weeks to 12 months, offering a healthy mix of shorter-cycle delivery and longer-term project involvement. The business also operates with a useful blend of exposure, carrying out roughly 50% of its work as a main contractor and 50% as a subcontractor.

From a location perspective, the majority of work is kept within roughly 90 minutes of the Warrington office, with a strong volume of projects across Preston, Lancaster and Cumbria.

Types of Work You Could Be Involved In

This is not a one-dimensional role. The company delivers a broad spread of civils and infrastructure projects, including water infrastructure and AMP8 works, such as wastewater treatment environments and storm tanks; highways and infrastructure schemes, including roads, junctions, drainage, utilities, earthworks and public realm; energy and power projects, including battery energy storage systems, substations, ducting and associated civils packages; industrial and process-based environments, where safety, coordination and quality are critical; and concrete, drainage, surfacing and remediation works, often on technically demanding sites.

The diversity of the workload makes this especially appealing for someone who enjoys variety and wants to remain involved in meaningful, technically interesting projects rather than repetitive small-scale work.

The Role

You will be responsible for leading site delivery and ensuring projects are properly resourced, well managed and professionally run. This will involve coordinating site teams, managing subcontractors, controlling programme performance, monitoring costs and maintaining strong day-to-day communication with clients, consultants and internal stakeholders.

You will also play an important role in setting standards on site, ensuring supervisors, engineers and operatives are clear on priorities, works are delivered in accordance with drawings and specification, and health, safety, environmental and quality expectations are consistently maintained.

Alongside delivery, there is a people element to the role as well. The business values individuals who can help develop junior engineers, supervisors and apprentices, supporting longer-term succession planning and building capability within the wider team.

What They Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will already have a proven track record in a Site Agent, Site Manager or Assistant Site Manager position within civil engineering. You should be comfortable taking ownership of live projects, making decisions on site, solving problems proactively and ensuring works are delivered safely and efficiently.

You will need a solid technical and operational grounding, combined with the leadership skills to motivate teams and maintain standards in demanding live environments.

Applicants should ideally have:

  • HNC/HND in Civil Engineering, Construction Management or similar
  • SMSTS
  • Management-level CSCS
  • Proven experience delivering civil engineering projects safely, on time and within budget
  • Good commercial awareness and the ability to manage resources effectively
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to deal confidently with clients, subcontractors and internal teams
  • A resilient, hands-on and solutions-led approach
