Quantity Surveyor / Senior Quantity Surveyor

(large, well-established civil engineering main contractor)


About the role:


We’re seeking a skilled Quantity Surveyor or Senior Quantity Surveyor to deliver first-class financial and commercial management across a portfolio of civil engineering schemes. You’ll lead on accurate measurement, valuation and cash-flow management, underpinning successful delivery so projects land on time, within budget and to the highest commercial standards.


Projects and scope:


  • New highways and road adaptations, RC structures, large drainage schemes and public realm works.
  • Individual project values from £250k to £55m, often design & build.
  • Geography: schemes between Berwick and Northallerton, with most activity in Tyne & Wear, County Durham and Teesside.
  • Working pattern: office, site and/or home working (hybrid).

North East Only - various depending on your location


What you’ll do:


  • Prepare and submit interim payment applications and final accounts.
  • Work confidently under NEC3/NEC4 (and other civil engineering standard forms).
  • Raise early warnings and drive risk reduction.
  • Notify, assess and submit quotations for compensation events.
  • Collaborate with the commercial team to ensure robust, accurate site records.
  • Attend client and stakeholder meetings as required.
  • Produce project financial forecasts and reports to the company’s commercial reporting timetable.
  • Lead subcontract procurement and management; approve orders and payments prepared by others.
  • Value, certify and/or approve payments to subcontractors.
  • Mentor and support QS colleagues to aid their development and achieve team objectives.

Qualifications & experience:


  • 5–10+ years’ proven commercial experience in civil engineering.
  • HND/degree (or equivalent) preferred.
  • Strong grasp of construction processes and procedures.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and standard IT packages.
  • Demonstrable experience across different contract frameworks and role-specific documentation.
  • Broad contracting and commercial skills with a track record of delivering results.
