We are seeking an Electrical Design Engineer to join our talented team and contribute to the design and delivery of high-quality treatment plant projects.

Job Purpose

The Electrical Design Engineer will play a key role in developing detailed electrical designs for municipal and industrial water and wastewater treatment plants. Working within a multidisciplinary project team, the role involves the design of low-voltage power distribution systems, motor control centres (MCCs), instrumentation, automation, and control systems — ensuring efficient, safe, and compliant designs from concept through to completion.

Key Responsibilities

Design & Technical Delivery

  • Produce detailed electrical designs for water and wastewater treatment systems including:
  • LV distribution and protection systems

  • Instrumentation and telemetry systems
  • Lighting, earthing, and small power systems
  • Prepare design documentation such as:
  • Single-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring drawings
  • Load schedules, cable calculations, and cable routing layouts
  • Control philosophies and I/O lists
  • Select and specify components including switchgear, drives, PLCs, and instrumentation.
  • Ensure compliance with BS7671 (IET Wiring Regulations), IEC standards, and water industry specifications (WIMES).
  • Undertake design risk assessments and support HAZOP/HAZCON reviews.
  • Contribute to the integration of electrical and control systems within the overall process design.

Project & Site Support

  • Work closely with Project Managers and Mechanical/Process Engineers to deliver coordinated, buildable solutions.
  • Provide design support during installation, testing, and commissioning phases.
  • Attend client and site meetings to discuss technical requirements and resolve design issues.
  • Review electrical installation works for compliance with design intent and standards.
  • Support the preparation of O&M manuals and as-built documentation.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Ensure all designs meet quality, health, and safety standards.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of design templates, processes, and standard details.
  • Support innovation in energy-efficient design and control solutions for treatment processes.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in electrical design for water or wastewater treatment or similar process industries.
  • Strong understanding of LV systems, control panel design, and process automation.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Electrical or EPLAN.
  • Familiarity with IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671), WIMES, and other relevant standards.
  • Experience producing design deliverables such as schematics, cable schedules, and control philosophies.
  • Excellent technical problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for client and team engagement.

Desirable:

  • Experience with PLC/SCADA systems (e.g. Siemens, Allen-Bradley).
  • Knowledge of telemetry systems and water industry communication protocols.
  • Understanding of ATEX and hazardous area design principles.
  • Working knowledge of BIM/Revit for M&E coordination.
  • Chartered Engineer status or working towards it (IET or equivalent).

Key Competencies

  • Technical accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative approach to problem solving.
  • Effective communication and coordination with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills.
  • Commitment to health, safety, and environmental excellence.
