Commissioning Manager
The opportunity has arisen to join an industry leader in UK’s & Ireland’s Building Services sector. Alternative Heat design, develop and deliver a wide range of offsite-prefabricated, innovative, and sustainable building service solutions throughout the UK & Europe.
What We Do:
We specialise in the design, supply, and installation of a wide range of prefabricated energy solutions, typically built in NI and shipped throughout the UK & Europe. We also offer turnkey design, build, and operate solutions for commercial energy centres and large-scale district heating solutions and have experience with successfully procuring and delivering many similar packages to a wide range of public bodies throughout UK & Europe.
Team Overview:
The Contracts department oversees the delivery and execution of projects from initial mobilisation through to completion and handover. Acting as the bridge between design, commercial, and on-site teams, the department ensures that all contractual obligations are met while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. With a focus on planning, resource coordination, and problem-solving, the Contracts team plays a key role in ensuring our projects are delivered on time, within scope, and to the satisfaction of our clients.
Role Overview:
This is a technical and leadership role requiring someone to own the offsite & on-site commissioning phase in MEP plantroom installations—from overseeing functional testing to handing over clean, client-ready systems.

What You’ll be Doing:
· Lead the development and execution of commissioning strategies for mechanical, electrical, and building services systems for Alternative Heat’s Data Centre projects across Europe.
· Develop business unit specific commissioning plans and execution strategies to oversee commissioning activities from design review (schematics, specifications, control sequences), FATs, SATs and the various site acceptance testing through to integrated systems testing and final handover.
· Develop and implement detailed commissioning plans for complex MEP systems including:
Ø HVAC systems (Chilled water, DX systems)
Ø Electrical systems (LV/MV distribution)
Ø Mechanical piping systems (pumps, control valves, flow meters, chillers, PHEX, chemical dosing, pressurisation and SSF, etc)
Ø Building Management Systems (BMS)
· Ensure all systems meet performance, reliability and compliance requirements.
· Develop and maintain commissioning plans, schedules, and progress reports across our data centre projects.
· Author, review and approve commissioning method statements, test scripts, and validation protocols from vendors, subcontractors and end users.
· Ensure all systems testing is carried out in accordance with the agreed Cx implementation plan and that all documentation is complete, accurate, and aligned to the plan and regulatory standards.
· Analyse system performance data to verify compliance with design intent and operational KPIs. Produce detailed commissioning reports, punch lists, and issue logs. Track and close out commissioning issues using structured workflows and digital platforms
· Lead and liaise with design teams, construction managers, subcontractors, and client representatives to ensure the Cx plans are communicated, understood and adhered to.
· Chair commissioning meetings and lead technical discussions. Act as the primary point of contact for all commissioning-related matters.
· Lead and coordinate off-site & on-site MEP commissioning activities, including HVAC, electrical distribution, control systems, piping, and BMS integration.
· Develop and manage comprehensive commissioning plans and schedules, aligned with project milestones and site programmes.
· Collaborate with internal teams (design, fabrication, project management) and external stakeholders (contractors, OEMs, commissioning agents) to ensure seamless integration and delivery.
· Inspect and monitor QA/QC standards during installation, testing, and handover.
· Oversee documentation: commissioning scripts, test results, punch lists, NCRs, O&M manuals, redlines, and handover packs.
· Conduct site inspections focusing on safety, quality, and compliance at every stage.
· Troubleshoot performance issues, drive swift remediation, and validate corrective actions.
· Ensure effective site reporting: status updates, risk logs, deviation reports, and stakeholder communications.
· Act as a client-facing, senior technical representative during commissioning.
· Champion site safety and compliance, including LOTO procedures, PPE, and other on-site safety protocols.
What You Need to Have:
· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical/electrical engineering, Building Services, or equivalent field experience.
· Minimum 10 years of construction related experience
· Minimum 5 years direct experience as a trade foreperson (preferably Commissioning MEP equipment in a hyperscale Data Centre)
· Experience managing end to end commissioning for a minimum of 3 mission critical projects.
· Skilled in using commissioning and project documentation tools (e.g. MS Project, CMMS, BIM-integrated software).
· Exemplary report writing skills with a high degree of attention to detail.
· Willingness to travel extensively to European sites.
What You Would Ideally Have:
· Accreditation such as CxA (NEBB/AABC), PMP, LEED AP, or similar commissioning credentials.
· Familiarity with commissioning standards: ASHRAE, NEBB, NFPA, LEED, etc.
· Experience with BIM workflows and DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly) is a plus.
· Previous exposure to the construction timeline of prefabricated MEP modules or plant skids is highly desirable.
